"Beijing Olympics 2008 - Skateboarding & BMX Big news today. Skateboarding and BMX will be in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The part that is really the good part is that skateboarding will be governed by skateboarders and not rollersports (roller rink people). Many, many thanks to Clarkie at www.realskate.com and Dave Carne (formerly Big Brother mag) for all their help in making this happen. Almost 2 years ago USA Rollersports approached me about partnering with them because they were the new Governing Body for skateboarding (recognized by the International Olympic Committee). We met with our board and skateboarders from all over and they did not want to be governed by USA Rollersports. We set up an International Governing Body and started the fight. The only media who picked up on it were Clarkie and Dave but they were ruthless in their defense of skateboarding. Some of the pro skateboarders started to boycott inline events and NBC got involved. Apparently they contacted Gary Ream from Camp Woodward and arranged for him to visit the IOC in Switzerland and he struck a deal to set up a new Governing Body which became official last Saturday. These are the basics: each of these organizations are on the board; SPAUSA, World Cup Skateboarding, IASC & UPSA. There are skateboarders, including Dave Carne, making up the rest of the board with the exception being Gary Ream who is president. Both Tony Hawk and Don Bostik (World Cup Skateboarding) are Vice Presidents. Chad Ford and myself are heading up the International Committee. I know that there are a lot of skateboarders who do not even want to go to the Olympics but the fact is it is out of their hands. Skateboarding was going but under rollerskating so this is better. It may make it easier for cities to get funding for skateparks too. And this is what cities have to watch out for. This is a skateboarding body and there are NO standard parks. Skateboarders want variety - don't let playground companies sell you a standard park, there is no such thing. One thing to keep in mind if you are planning to send your own BMX'ers and Skateboarders to the Olympics in 2008 - it will be for vert only so you might want to build at least 1 deep bowl park or a 1/2 pipe and vert ramp. " For those that don't know roller sports was basically a bunch of roller skaters and bladers who a few years back just decided out of the blue that they were skateboardings governing body. they did this regardless of the fact that we already had a governing body, which was world cup skateboarding. rollerspots knew that their sports sucked and that they wern't going to get them into the olympics so they basically took skateboarding without consulting anyone. they are out of the picture now (as is my understanding) and although i don't really want skating in the olympics (imagine the drug tests) i'm at least happy that it will be goverend by skateboarders.

Hmm... i dont really think we should go to the Olympics because we have the X-Games which is our Olympics... this looks like another turn to selling out skateboarding...

"Not our decision" eh? I say we boycott the assholes for trying to take our sport. Tony Hawk as a vice president? Yeah, we are really fucked now.

I dont get it, it seems like when people like something thats underground (skating, underground music) its great and awesome. But once it goes mainstream everyone thinks its evil and they hate it.
So skateboarding is finally starting to get reconized, how is that a bad thing?

So skateboarding is finally starting to get reconized, how is that a bad thing? It's because other people go along with "cool" things, inviting a massive flow of morons into out sport. We like it "underground", and I don't know about you guys, but I want to keep it that way. Compare it to an actual scene. Say you find a godly skate spot, say it has a perfect ledge for you. Now let's say some asshole blabbered to the neighborhood about your special spot, and now everyone is waxing it till it's stickier than the wart on my bus driver's face, with tons of BMX'ers and fruitbooters tearing it up too. We earned our right to call ourselves skateboarders through lots of sweat, perserverance, and blood, as well as a genuine appreciaton for skateboarding, and I'll be damned if I want some asshole to think they are a real skateboarder because they went out and bought a board, clothes, and talk the talk. HELL NO.

I see nothing wrong with it. Skating doesn't always have to be different, and if new people come into it, SO WHAT. They won't ruin it if the 'real' skaters stay dedicated.

Water is wet. The sky is blue. Skateboarding periodically becomes a fad.
Skate because you love to skate. Enjoy being able to see someone assplant besides yourself. Do you think City Hall is going to build a skatepark for YOU? I understand your grievance, but at the same time,...have you ever carved a well-made snake run? I have. Not that well, but I did it all the same. Sure, I dodged a few rollerf*gs and a bike the first time I tried it, but then I came back on a Monday morning at about seven and it was all good. Have you ever dropped in on an eleven-foot bowl made of the smoothest concrete you can imagine? Well neither have I, but I could try if I wanted to because there's one at the park and it's free to go there 24 hours a day. Things like this get built only when there's a demand for one. It's like Yin and Yang, dude. If you're true, you know it. That should be all that matters.

as for skateboarding staying underground and all that i couldn't care, cause i skate and thats all that matters. but as for skating in the olympics, well i just don't think it would work. you have all these athletes who actually train and are up at the crack of dawn, then you have these skaters who can cause havoc, a good portion drink a fair bit and a portion also do certain things which would fail their olympic drug test. the skateboarding world and the olympic sports world are two very different places and i really don't see them going together very smoothly.

that'll be so awsome when some skater who has battled through cancer and wins gold in vert gets on a stamp. that will be funny as hell.
i think its kinda gay. but alot of skaters will boycot it. it will be like andy mac and stuff. if burnquist goes in it will hate him. its good to raise your family as best you can, but when you have a skatepark that is the best in the world and you OWN it (not pay mortgage) in you back yard, you are rich enough that you dont need to just arse rape skateboarding like that.

I'm just curious as to how each country is going to choose their participant(s)....probably through some kind of open competition...

Shit that will be the gayest thing I've ever seen. How the hell can they have vert only? Only 2% of the skaters in the world consider themselves vert skaters. Shit. Why can't they have street? Watching vert gets really boring after a while.
As for it ruining skateboarding........I really do care. And I know someone trying to be a smartass will say just to ignore them, but when there are so many POSERS coming into skateboarding I get pissed off. To see this flood of morons in my neighbourhood alone who hardly ever skate, who try to do the hardest tricks around, who get hurt really bad by going straight to the huge 10 stair at their skatepark, and who wear clothes that make them look different JUST to make themselves look like skaters, it's so annoying. I told this one guy off when he comes off and say "you wanna see a full tre flip?" and he goes for a laser flip and it comes around and hit him right the the back of his knees and he fell cuz he flipped it too hard. I friking got so pissed off. He said that he could kickflip and he tried it about 6 times (at a standstill too) and never got it so I just had to show him how it's done. He pissed me off so I had to, it was uncontrollable. I would normally hold it in. I hate how people follow the video games more than the actualy skate world. How they think a sex change is an ollie body varial, and that a person can actually withstand a drop in which they have enough air to do a huge degree rotation. Blah, I got way off of topic. Anyways it will ruin skateboarding no matter what, but c'mon, I probably won't be skating anymore in 2008 because I'm going into high school next year and I know things will change, I saw it in my brother and I know it will happen to me, it's worse in mississauga than in toronto. In mississauga theres a huge amount of posers and shit who follow every single skate event happening and they think they'll be cool, and what will add to their "being cool" by watching all these events and making sure they keep up to date on skateboarding? The biggest sports event in the world! The olympics. Hopefully it will be cancelled by the time 2008 comes, and hopefully the skate trend will die because of some breakthrough technology that's better than MSN that people can occupy their so called precious time with.
I've gone on long enough and got off topic quite a few times. Whatever, I don't care, I've typed too much to throw it all away.

Well, think of all of the lame asses busting themselves. What do you think is going to happen when a shit load of parents have a bunch of screwed up little kids cause they kept trying to look cool and jacked themselves up? It's gonna lead to a LOT of local governments passing laws against skating in the streets or public areas. IF, after all of the examples of how idiots get fucked up skating, they decide to build a local park, it's gonna be riddled with fees, waivers, and pads. Even if they decide to build a park, which again may not be likely after all of this, you'll be pretty damn lucky if you get a park worth shit. Not every town has the budget or space to build a park. It just won't work.
